Winter doldrums at the Jersey shore? Sure. But not in Cape May. I know you think the sidewalks get rolled up. You think people are shuddered in place by the fire. Not in Cape May.
Last month’s Robert Burns supper on a Thursday night, last week’s “Ice Ball” and last night’s celebration/pep rally at the Mad Batter clearly prove that life goes on in Cape May all winter.
NJ dot com sent Peter Genovese into Cape May to visit two bars in the Best Bar of New Jersey competition. The Mad Batter and the CView are semi-finalists in the chiseled down list of sixty remaining bars in the competition. It started out with a simple online nomination and was followed with a social media barrage that brought Mark Kulkowitz’s Mad Batter into the heat of the competition. Again social media rules!
First there was the presentation of the proclamation that the Mad Batter was a semi-finalist:
This was not just another media writer event designed to bring attention to it’s own publication. It truly has the feel of legitimate competition. NJ.com brought their own photographer to capture the event:
Peter Genovese was here to truly discover what makes the Mad Batter stand out among the other bars in Cape May and in New Jersey. He was interviewing people:
Mark pulled out all the stops to create a welcoming atmosphere for both Peter and the locals who crowded in on this blustery Thursday night. There was Andy Reeves singing:People eating appetizers of wings and pizza and hummus and on and on provided by the Mad Batter:People tweeting that Peter Genovese was in Cape May, and that the Mad Batter was in it to win it:And of course there were people photo-bombing other people:
Cape May has a lot of great bars. Some we affectionately refer to as “living rooms.” Last night was the Mad Batter’s turn in the spotlight and it shined. Now if the crab cake that Peter Genovese is eating in the above picture was as good as he remembered from ten years ago, then the Mad Batter should certainly be a finalist. Stay tuned.
It was a great night John. Great job with the pics by the way. As you so eloquently noted the food, entertainment, and friends were excellent. We’re pulling for Mark and the Mad Batter to bring home the big prize (no offense to the C-View).
Hope the Mad Batter wins !!!! I’m a tourist but go every time I’m in town
