Celebrities don’t flock to Cape May, but they do come and they like it here. Celebrities of many different styles, news, writers, actors and talk show hosts make up the mix. They usually arrive under the radar with little fanfare. Most people here in Cape May respect the privacy of celebrities and they appreciate the discretion they are shown.
It’s no secret that Oprah, Ann Hathaway, Tina Fey just to name a few, find Cape May attractive for the same reasons most visitors enjoy the town. Oprah and Ann have family connections here that make the choice somewhat different from just selecting Cape May as a destination.
Most of us in the hospitality business or engaged in social media maintain an unwritten code of ethics about the presence of celebrities vacationing in Cape May.
While we may whisper among ourselves with this sighting or that sighting, we won’t publicly say anything unless the celebrity declares it first. Then we might brag they’re here.
It was once widely rumored that Bruce Springsteen was in town. He was reported to help promote the attempted preservation of the Beach Movie theater. One of Bruce’s associates did have the Boss make a statement in a movie promoting the project, but his sighting was never confirmed.
It was fun imagining that Bruce Springsteen might have traveled further south than Asbury Park.
Now that the warmer weather has beset us and most areas around us are recovering from such a harsh winter, I’d expect to see more SUV’s with darkened windows roll into town. Celebrity spotting will once again become a summer sport. You might find Ann Hathaway dancing at Carney’s or Oprah dining at the Blue Pig.
Tina Fey won’t be doing her stand up routine anywhere in town, but you might just find her strolling the Washington Street Mall. One thing is certain, you won’t hear it from me first, unless you’re on my VIP contact list, and that’s pretty short.
I like to point and them and yell, “Ohhhhhhh ohhhhhhh ohhhhhhhh!” Haha! Did you know even Supreme Court Justices visit Cape May? Justice Ginsberg suprised everyone one morning at the Queen Victoria breakfast table, as she had registered under an assumed name and nobody noticed. They had a couple other celebrities over there. Also, Tina Few (I think it was her) did get up and sing karioke at one of Terry O’Brien’s shows. Very cool!

Actually that was Ann Hathaway. Terry will never forget it.
And I appreciate it when I’m in town and you don’t say anything John. Haha. Good story.
I hate when the Cape May paparazzi invades my privacy. It is such a bother.
