Finding Calm in the Craziness of the Season

Yesterday, my desk clerk asked me how I would celebrate completing the Word Count Freelance Blogathon? I replied with: “writing a blog on July 1st.” A quick review  tells me that the past several blogs have been published after 6:30 PM most days. Another sign of the work life schedule.

This past week was an arduous one. That’s not a complaint, that’s a description. Today we gear up for one of the busiest weeks of the summer. The week leading up to the July 4th holiday is always crazier than most other weeks for some reason.

In the hectic pace that becomes the norm for working in Cape May, it becomes necessary to find serenity in any way possible. Walking Joy, my dog, near the harbor along Delaware avenue is one of the ways I accomplish this. Getting away from the crowds and distractions of in-town activity is a great source of bliss and inspiration.

Watching the sailboats pass through the Intracoastal waterway, out to the canal is a favorite pass time. Daydreaming about where they’ve been or are headed, creates its own mental distraction. Inevitably this helps to inspire future blog subjects, Instagram posts and other sources of social media engagement with people who love Cape May.

If you’re on vacation, and the pace seems hectic, perhaps you need an early morning walk on the beach or harbor, before the masses wake up. It will soothe the soul and calm the spirit.

Of course there are other ways to find distractions, but this is one is healthier. For now, I will continue to wake up at 5:30AM, walk the dog, either in town or out at the harbor, collect my thoughts and get on with the day.

Beautiful post, John. Also, I’m happy to hear you’ll be celebrating the end of the Blogathon by writing another blog. So will I.

John, I am really enjoying your writing. Unfortunately my Cape May vacation is over already for this year…so I will enjoy it vicariously through you. Don’t work too hard!
