It starts with a list. No, it starts with the host, who has the list.
The list the host has, fills up quickly and develops into an incredibly surprising Sunday night at the Mad Batter in Cape May.
Each Sunday night at the Mad Batter in Cape May, your host Michael Quinn Murphy, ( MQ to his adoring fans) arrives before 7:00 PM with some equipment a guitar and a yellow pad of paper.
Initially the yellow pad of paper is empty. It fills quickly as musicians begin to arrive with the serendipitous offer to perform and listen to others. And just like that an epic Sunday night at the Mad Batter in Cape May is created.
Some Sunday nights the list takes a little longer to fill up, but it’s always full. The names on the list belong to all styles and ages of performers.
This past Sunday night at the Mad Batter in Cape May was no exception. It bordered on amazing for a variety of reasons. The list filled up early and so did the bar.
The performers were refreshingly original and delightful to listen too. Some were regular visitors and some were here on vacation along with their dedicated following of family fans.
Local favorite and promising youngster, Reid Shriver, performed Johnny Cash and Paul Simon like a performer twice his years. His Paul Simon version of Me and Julio was a hit on Instagram with close to 300 views today.
My love for Sunday night at the Mad Batter in Cape May is no secret. It’s like a retreat to a personal house concert where gifted musicians bring their talent and we get to return our appreciation for their craft. It’s a special time in Cape May.
