Shipboard Volunteers Wanted Meerwald
The folks at the Bayshore center asked me to pass along the following information for anyone interested in serving as a volunteer on board ship this summer. Learning “heave-ho” included.
WHAT: Bayshore Center at Bivalve Announces Its Annual Appeal for New Shipboard Volunteers and the 2017 Volunteer Training Schedule
WHERE: Bayshore Center at Bivalve, 2800 High St, Port Norris, NJ 08349
WHEN: Saturday, February 18, 2017 at 9am
Bayshore Center at Bivalve announces its annual volunteer training program for individuals interested in learning the ins and outs of sailing and maintaining the 1928 oyster schooner, the A. J. Meerwald. Just think, when the New Jersey’s Tall Ship, the A. J. Meerwald comes to a port near you….YOU could be a volunteer crew member!
BCB also trains volunteers as museum docents, oral history interviewers and educators for their Delaware Bay Museum & Folklife Center. Volunteers are the lifeblood of the center and also help with basic administrative and facility maintenance tasks.
Lunch will be provided during training. Reservations are required. Reply to volunteer@bayshorecenter. org or call Chase Jackson at (856) 785-2060 ext. 108 to RSVP.
There’s no commitment beyond BCB’s initial orientation.
Orientation Date For All New Volunteers:
Saturday, February 18th from 9am-12pm provides an introduction to the organization. Learn about its mission and objectives; meet the staff and current volunteers; learn how volunteers help make it all happen; get your questions answered. All prospective volunteers must attend an orientation session. If unable to make this date, there will be other dates available.
New Shipboard Volunteers
Saturdays,
February 18th and March 4th, 18th from 9am-4pm
Saturday, April 1st from 12-4pm
Participation in all four sessions is expected to obtain the necessary skill sets to be a shipboard volunteer. There will be plenty of practical hands-on experience. Volunteers will learn traditional boating skills, ship maintenance, safety, regional history and the environmental and historical programs presented onboard.
