Cape May Rainy Weather Travel Plans

Cape May Rainy Weather Travel Plans

Three years and eleven months ago, I wrote a blog about Cape May rainy weather plans. Titled Every Vacation Needs a Plan B, listing countless ideas to salvage a vacation on rainy days. The kind of days when the wipers on intermittent squeal across the windshield of  beading rain.

Though many ideas still hold, exciting new opportunities have appeared. In this blog post we will try to update the old list, highlight favorites and point out what’s new.

Cape May is not immune to rainy days. One of our favorite things to do with kids of any age is the Aviation Museum at the Cape May Airport. You can actually imagine the roar of the engines as you touch the cold steel surrounding them.  The museum has been the topic of our podcast on the Locals.

Practically on the same grounds as the airport, Cape May Brewing Company is a great activity for the adult kids. Take the tour, sample a flight of craft beer and take home some swag from the gift shop. The Always Ready is one of our favorites. A Northeast Pale Ale brewed as a hat tip to the Coast Guard.  Grab tacos at Cape May Tacos next door.

If craft beer is not your thing, Nauti Spirits is on the way back to Cape May from the airport. Turn off Sandman onto Shunpike Road if you’re returning from the airport. The Distillery is on the right. The new local craft distillery is offering spirits made from nature’s bounty, and for those wishing to taste the “sweet life,” Nauti Spirits is just the spot. Insider tip: The 2000 lb Dog will make you forget the Moscow Mule.

Willow Creek Winery on Stevens Street in West Cape May is another adult distraction to solve those rainy day blues. The preserved farm and winery is just a short drive from Broadway, with an expansive indoor tasting room.

How Many Things Can You do on Rainy Days?

Getting the impression that booze solves the rainy day dilemma?  In fact something entirely new this year will be the Coffee Shop Crawl. Imagine going from coffee shop to coffee shop and catching a barista buzz. From a new Coffee Tyme location on the mall to Ostara in West Cape May, Cape May has seen a surge in Coffee Shops in the past year.

There are so many things to do on rainy days. Let’s list some other fun drier things to do that don’t involve alcohol.

On the island of Cape May

  • The Cape May Lighthouse and World War II Tower
  • Emlen Physick Estate & Trolley Tours
  • Tour the Nature Center of Cape May on Delaware Avenue.
  • Stroll the Hallways and shops of Congress Hall and take in the history on the walls
  • Grab and umbrella and shop the Washington Street Mall, including the indoor mall.
  • Find the perfect vintage souvenir in The Antiques Emporia or West End Garage

Off the island of Cape May

  • The Cape May County Zoo
  • Wetlands Institute, Stone Harbor
  • Cold Spring Village
  • Cape May Winery

If, like four years ago, the reservations are made and the forecast is bad, don’t let it ruin your day. Hotels don’t control the weather and they don’t want you to cancel your reservation. Like Bob Marley says, “some people feel the rain, others just get wet.” Make the best of your vacation.

Great blog….I enjoyed it. I would also suggest the Library in Cape May. Great place to just sit back and read a book in a comfortable chair. Also that 2nd hand store and antique place near the Lobster House will keep you looking and searching for 2 hrs. Searching for what?? Oh lots of things you probably don’t need. But I found two great diatonic harmonicas there that now are being used in Newfoundland. ~Mike Madigan (mike underscore Madigan at ya h oo dot c o m) PS John,…We miss Cape May (you and Joy) but are enjoying the beauty of Gros Morne Nat Park in Newfoundland

John, please share your blog post with Cool Cape May. Every time there is rain in the forecast, vacationers ask what there is to do.

That’s a great compilation of suggestions. Cape May and it’s surrounding communities have much to offer whether the suns out or the rain is falling. As the announcer used to say on the Price is Right, “come on down”. Well done John.

Great list … my kids loved the Aviation Museum. West End Garage is a great rainy day stop. So many goodies to keep you busy for awhile … plus now they have the cafe with delicious goodies. My family and I also like to head down Sunset Blvd. There’s a few shops with parking … Cape May Honey Farm, The Wicker Store to name just a couple. In Cape May even a rainy day is a beautiful day.
